The Jersey City Department of Recreation has released their 2015 springtime events calendar with mayor Steve Fulop calling for people to “put down the video games or get off the couch, and use some of these great outdoor activities now that the weather is better.”
Just in time for summertime (preferably at the Jersey Shore, of course), free swimming lessons are available weekly at Public Schools, 6, 16, 23, and 27 for children aged 6 to 14.
Yoga classes for seniors as well as adults will be conducted three days a week at Grace Chrurch, Ocean Towers and the New Jersey City University.
In addition, the Girl’s Basketball Academy program will continue at Public School 12, with sessions for 7-to-13 and 14-to-17-year olds.
The full calendar is online at http://jerseycitynj.gov/recreation-events.aspx.
The Novo Nordisk Diabetes Center at CentraState Medical Center is offering a support group for people with diabetes and their families. The group will meet on the third Wednesday of every month from 1-2 p.m. in the Jack Aaronson Conference Center in The Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus, 901 W. Main St., Freehold. The first support group, on April 15, will discuss the connection between diabetes and sleep apnea, the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing, and be presented by Isabella Kaplunovitch, coordinator, The Center for Sleep Disorders at CentraState.
Research shows that 40 percent of people with sleep apnea have diabetes. Participants who attend this support group will learn the associations between sleep apnea and insulin resistance and autonomic neuropathy; the effects sleep apnea has on glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes; and its symptoms and signs in a diabetic patient.
Space is limited and registration is required. For more information and to register for the support group, call 732-308-0570 or visit http://centraState.com/HealthPrograms.
