Rock Against Dystrophy was founded in 2009 by brothers Turbo and Jay Scorpion. Both have spinal muscle atrophy, one of the 40 neuromuscular diseases the Muscular Dystrophy Association addresses with their research and patient services.
The Mission of Rock Against Dystrophy is to assemble and inspire the next generation of people who want to do all that they can to make a better tomorrow for the health of the all of those affected with neuromuscular diseases.
In muscular dystrophy, abnormal genes (mutations) interfere with the production of proteins needed to form healthy muscle. Certain genes are involved in making proteins that protect muscle fibers from damage. Muscular dystrophy occurs when one of these genes is defective. Some people who have muscular dystrophy will eventually lose the ability to walk; others may have trouble breathing or swallowing.
There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. But medications and therapy can help manage symptoms and slow the course of the disease.
The main sign of muscular dystrophy is progressive muscle weakness. Specific signs and symptoms begin at different ages and in different muscle groups, depending on the type of muscular dystrophy.
The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) takes a big picture perspective across the full spectrum of neuromuscular diseases to uncover scientific and medical breakthroughs that accelerate treatments and cures. The power in our research approach is that we can often apply learnings from one disease to progress in others to bring urgently-needed answers to our families.
