Blindness/Low Vision Prevention:
Macular Degeneration · Eat Right For Your Sight

While there is no cure for age-related macular degeneration, medical research suggests that a diet rich in lutein, zeaxanthin, and other key nutrients can delay its onset and progress.
Eat Right for Your Sight, by veteran cookbook author Jennifer Trainer Thompson and doctor of ophthalmology Johanna M. Sedden, offers delicious ways to add the best ingredients for eye health (even not-so-favorite vegetables as beets and kale) to every meal of the day — including dessert!

New Jersey Eye Health & Safety Resources

New Jersey Blind Citizens Association – Since 1910, their programs and services for the blind and visually impaired have unlocked opportunities for personal growth, happiness and new experiences. With the help of donors, volunteers, and other supporters, our participants gain the independence and confidence to lead healthy, self-sufficient, and productive lives.
New Jersey Council Of The Blind – An affiliate of the American Council of the Blind, the goals are to increase the independence of people with visual impairments through education, networking and mentoring. Our membership is primarily made up of legally blind people over the age of 16. There are quarterly meetings in January, April, July, and October, with a convention in October in the even-numbered years.
National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey – With their chapters, divisions, programs, and projects, the NFB of NJ is making the public aware that the real problem concerning blindness is not blindness itself but the lack of knowledge, understanding, and opportunity from our sighted peers. NFB of NJ is the largest organization of the blind in the nation and in the state. Get involved with helping them live the lives they want!
NJ Dept. of Health Eye Health Services – The Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired believes that every resident  has the right of access to services that will prevent or limit the impact of vision loss. They provide services in the areas of eye health and eye safety by offering free vision screenings for adults and children with a concerted effort on the low-income, elderly, minorities, diabetics and those with special needs.
The Seeing Eye  breeds and raises puppies to become Seeing Eye dogs; trains Seeing Eye dogs to guide blind people; instructs blind people in the proper use, handling, and care of the dogs; and conducts and supports research on canine health and development. A benefit organized by the Beacon Hill Musicians will be held April 9, 2016, at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey.
