The 8th Annual Miracles for Myeloma 5K (3.1 Mile) Run/Walk will be a virtual edition taking place on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Oak Ridge Park in Clark, New Jersey.

Registration is open participants all around the world — and you don’t have to be a runner or even a fan of walking to participate! Run, walk, bike, or treadmill on your own path to complete the Miracles for Myeloma 5K!

Choose your virtual run and complete it at your pace. You can run one mile a day over the course of three days, or complete the full run at one time (if you are running for a medal, the 5K must be completed in one segment). Wear your prior Miracles for Myeloma T-shirt or a maroon shirt while running. Adhere to proper social distancing: avoid walking/biking through crowded thoroughfares like parks, lakesides, and beachfronts.

Myeloma is the cancer of the bone marrow plasma cells. It frequently occurs in “multiple” areas of the bone marrow, such as the spine, skull, pelvis, rib cage, and the areas around the shoulders and hips.

Because red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are made in the bone marrow, multiple myeloma disrupts their production. As a result, patients may also develop anemia (low red blood cell count) with susceptibility to infections; low white blood cell count (neutropenia); and/or low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) with an increased bleeding tendency.

Kidney disease is a common complication of myeloma — it occurs in 20–25% of newly diagnosed patients, and in up to 50% of patients with active myeloma. It can also suppress one’s immune response.

The goal for the event is to raise $100,000. There are several ways of showing your support for fighting this incurable disease. You can have a printable placard to be displayed on the Virtual Remembrance Path: these signs will have the person’s name and a short note included. They will serve to recognize a survivor or remember a loved one who may have lost their battle from cancer, but remain in our hearts. Or you can simply make an online donation.
