The Veterans Administration will bring its mobile outpatient van to Hammonton on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Staff from the VA’s Wilmington, Delaware-based Medical Center will offer VA healthcare enrollment, identification card issuance, and medical screenings to area veterans. Vets should be sure to bring their existing VA identification card or their DD-214 with them at the time of screening or enrollment.
The mobile health service van will be located in the parking lot of the Peachtree Plaza shopping center on Route 30/White Horse Pike, in front of the Advance Auto Parts store. Coffee and other refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 66, and the American Legion, F.A. Funiston Post 186.
The idea of bringing the VA’s mobile outpatient van to Hammonton grew out of discussions by the Hammonton Veterans Advisory Committee, which was created by Mayor Steve DiDonato in January 2015 following a request from area resident Dan Bachalis, who now chairs the group. The group wants the VA to establish a permanent medical presence in Hammonton, and hopes to demonstrate sufficient need in the area through this initiative.
In addition to the VA’s medical screenings and enrollment, the DAV will assist vets in resolving questions about VA benefit claims. “We’re working together with the VA to ensure that our vets receive the medical services they require, and we want to be sure that any problems with getting those services are kept to a minimum,” said Gordon Lee Payne, Commander of local DAV Chapter 66.

The Hammonton Veterans Advisory Committee meets the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in Hammonton Town Hall’s third floor conference room; all members of the public are welcome to attend. Veterans living in Hammonton are encouraged to join or at least register with an area veteran’s organization, including the DAV, American Legion and VFW, Passalaqua Post 1026.
