The fourth annual Paddle The Peninsula kayak event will take place at 16th Street Park on Oct. 3, Mayor James Davis and the Bayonne City Council announced.
“Paddle the Peninsula will be a great experience for all participants,” Davis said. “We look forward to this fun event, which will enable our residents to enjoy recreation in Newark Bay. Come and have a great time on the water with your family, friends, and neighbors.”
For novices, kayaks will enter Newark Bay from the boat launch at the foot of DiDomenico-16th Street Park at 12:30 p.m. The boat launch is on Newark Bay, west of Avenue A, and below the end of West 16th Street.
This year, experienced kayakers will enter the water at Rutkowski Park and will paddle down to 16th Street at 11:30 a.m. Rutkowski Park is in the northwestern corner of Bayonne, just north of Stephen R. Gregg-Bayonne County Park.
Kayakers must be at least 16 years old. Participants may bring their own kayaks or sign up to use ones provided at the event.
Refreshments and light snacks will be available.
Registration is required, so that the right number of kayaks and other supplies can be ordered. To register, call the Bayonne Planning and Zoning Office at 201-858-6182.
For safety purposes, the Bayonne Fire Department will have three vessels in Newark Bay during the event. The New Jersey State Police will have a marine vessel in the bay for additional security. McCabe Ambulance will have a unit on shore as a precaution.
“Paddle the Peninsula is just one of the many great activities that the City of Bayonne has to offer,” Davis said. “We hope you will register and join us on Sunday, October 3.”
