All state-regulated health insurance plans must now provide coverage for abortions with the exception of nonprofit religious employers who seek permission to opt-out, the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance has announced.
Since January, small businesses and individuals who buy insurance coverage from the state’s official health insurance marketplace, Get Covered New Jersey, and the plans covering state workers and teachers have been required to cover surgical and medication abortions. That expectation has now been extended to large state-regulated employers as of this week.
Coverage does not mean the service is free — costs associated with deductibles and co-pays apply like with any procedure, according to state regulations. The state Legislature resisted calls from pro-abortion rights groups to require insurance to cover all costs for abortions because lawmakers did not want to make it seem too easy to get an abortion.
