Over the weekend of October 15th, 2021, nearly four dozen New Jersey rock bands performed 30 minute sets for New Jersey internet radio station BlowUpRadio.com to raise funds for the 14th annual Banding Together: Benefit For The Spondylitis Association of America (SAA).
During these times when enhanced safety protocols are necessary at live concerts, the Banding Together webathon was unique in that it was strictly virtual: all the bands performed remotely for the audience to enjoy online in the comfort of their homes.
Donors during the webathon qualified to access the downloading of a compilation album consisting of an unreleased song from each of the performing bands, as does everyone who contributes throughout October 2021.
Spondylitis is a genetic rheumatoid arthritic condition that causes inflammation and fusion in the vertebrae of the spine. It usually first appears before 45 years of age, with pain and stiffness persisting for more than three months that worsens with immobility — especially while trying to rest at night and early morning — but tends to ease with physical activity and exercise.
Often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years, the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) says spondylitis affects more than 2.7 million adults in the US.
“It means so much to me that we are able to do this benefit for the Spondylitis Association of America each year,” says Lazlo, the founder of BlowUpRadio.com and the organizer of Banding Together.
“My wife was diagnosed with spondylitis 15 years ago. I have watched the debilitating effects of this disease and the chronic pain and discomfort it causes.”
BlowUpRadio.com, which specializes in showcasing independent New Jersey bands, has raised over ten thousand dollars for this cause.
